10-12 On the way to Cairns
10-12 On the way to Cairns
We departed from Schiphol airport in an Emirates A380 in the evening of November 10th. First stop was Dubai where we boarded an A380 from Qantas heading for Sydney. As we already feared our stopover time in Sydney for our flight to Cairns turned out way to short and we were rescheduled on another flight, but unfortunately with a long stopover in Brisbane. We finally arrived in Cairns late in the evening of November 11th.

13 From Cairns to Magnetic Island
After picking up our rental car, a Mitsubishi Outlander, we headed for Townsville via the Atherton Tablelands. Around midday we discovered that we would not make it to the ferry for Magnetic Island in time if we wouldn't travel faster so we head for the Bruce Highway. We quickly found out that we would never make it in time so we called the ferry station to get us booked on a later ferry. With more time on our hands we could now continue the journey at a much more comfortabel pace. After arriving in Townsville it took some effort to find the ferry station, and after arriving at Magnetic Island we had some trouble location the entrance to our hotel but we made it, be it not before dark...

Our stay at Magnetic Island didn't start very well, arriving at the trail where we hoped to spot Koala's it started raining and we had to change our plans. After a site-seeing tour over the island we went back to the trail after the rain stopped, and we did spot a few Koala's!

The sun was shining and it was hot when we left Magnetic Island. Our first first stop after getting off the ferry was a gas station, then we headed for Airlie Beach. We arrived in the afternoon at our hotel, two miles outside of the town. We walked to the town center which turned out to be full of backpackers, many of which where Dutch!

Because of the many tourists we didn't manage to book a snorkeling trip as everything was fully booked, so we had to change to plan B which was going to the beach. However, the hotelmanager didn't recommend that, he said there were poisonous jellyfish. So we had to settle for Plan C, spend the day at the hotel pool. Turned out to be a day well spent...

After breakfast in a small restaurant near the hotel we took off for the long ride to the Eungella National Park, located in the Mackay Highlands. The last part of the ride went up the very steep hills where we found the Broken River Mountain Resort. After settling in in our lodge we took a walk along the creek next to the resort and spotted the Platypus!

As part of our arrangement we had several options for excursions and we picked the Palm Grove/Clarke Range track, which is about 8 kilometers long. A jeep from the resort to us to the starting point from where we walked and enjoyed fantastic views and great scenery, passing the Piccabeen Palm grove. The track continued over the Clarke Range back to the Broken River which we crossed and experienced fantastic views over Pioneer Valley. In the evening we again saw the Platypus and after dinner in the restaurant of the resort also a Possum who came for our leftovers on the terrace.

The ride to Fraser Island was too long to do in one day so there was a sleepover stop at Capricorn Coves. To get on the Bruce Highway again from the mountains we had to pass through an area with only dirt roads but we managed to get through without any problems, and we did see our first kangaroos there! We arrived at Capricorn Coves late in the afternoon. Because the resort did not have a restaurant we drove to a truckers cafe down the road to get something to eat, and guess what, we had the best steaks of our entire holiday there...

20 From Capricorn Coves to Fraser Island
During an early walk around the Capricorn Coves resort we spotted many small kangaroos called Wallabi's, many species of birds and the occasional huge spider. After getting back on the Bruce Highway we drove to the ferry station where we would board the ferry to Fraser Island. At the ferry station we had to leave the car and most of our luggage. The ferry took us to Fraser Island in slightly less than an hour. Our accommodation was fantastic, which couldn't be said for the food on our first night. The hamburgers were all right, but the fries were the worst ever and the pizza wasn't very tasty either. And on top of that, hot started to rain and the weather report predicted more of that the next day...

21 Fraser Island
Our stay at Fraser Island wasn't the most memorable part of our holiday. The day started off with rain, and the hike we had planned was spoiled by the fact that we got completely covered in vicious big black flies when we entered the trail. So the hike was cancelled and maybe that wasn't so bad because it soon started to rain again. At least we found a much better restaurant which made up for the rest of the day.

22 From Fraser Island to Noosa Heads
It was already raining when we boarded the ferry from Fraser Island back to the mainland and that didn't get any better during the ride to Noosa Heads. We had some really bad weather on the way but when arriving in Noosa Heads in the afternoon the sun was shining again.
23 Noosa Beach
23 Noosa Beach
Yesterday evening we decided to make a boattrip today to Noosa Beach, which was swiftly arranged via a call yesterday evening. The weather was fantastic, it was hot even on the water, which made the trip very enjoyable. After the trip we visited the town of Noosa Beach, later in the afternoon we took a ferry back to Noosa Heads (which was part of the trip package). Just like yesterday we had our dinner in a restaurant next to the marina of Noosa Heads.
